Phd Thesis

Plant-microbiota interactions

My PhD work (Doctoral FCT grant PD/BD/135249/2017) explores the bacterial endophytic communities associated to wheat plants and evaluates how their dynamics are affected when roots are inoculated with phytobeneficial microbes. The work developed during my PhD thesis has shown that the application of the inoculant Herbaspirillum seropedicae (Hs) in wheat roots leads to a change in the composition of the seed-borne endophytic commnity. The optimization of a methodology to grow these communities in root extracts, together with metabolomic analyses, has allowed to explore the metabolic potential of this seed-borne endophyitic communities in light of their capacity to modulate the levels of key Trp-related metabolites in the root endosphere. The present study contributes to the understanding of the crosstalk between plants, seed-borne endophytes and inoculants, and explores an overlooked mechanism of action of inoculants – the modulation of the seed-borne endophytic community composition and functionality.
