The main challenge to the drinking water (DW) industry is to deliver a product that is microbiologically and chemically safe, aesthetically pleasing and adequate in quantity and delivery pressure. Biofilms constitute one of the major microbial problems in DW distribution systems (DWDS) that most contributes to the deterioration of water quality. However, their elimination from DWDS is almost impossible, but several parameters can be manipulated in order to prevent and control their growth. Fungi are excellent candidates for DW biofilm formation but this aspect is still poorly understood and even less is known about inter-kingdom biofilms involving fungi and bacteria.The purpose of this project is to understand the role of fungi on DW biofilm formation and behaviour. Alterations in the gene expression of the microorganism’s will also be studied as well as the effects of fungi-bacteria interactions in a control context with a DW disinfectant.
