Fostering the development of new anti-Candida therapies based on probiotic lactobacilli

Candida albicans (Ca) and C. glabrata (Cg) are common human commensals but under certain conditions can cause

mucosal infections and, in more serious cases, life-threatening systemic candidiasis. About 75% of women are

estimated to experience vulvovaginal candidiasis during their life-time, a substantial percentage recurrently.

Metagenomics has unveiled an essential role of commensal lactobacilli in vaginal health including in restrain of

candidiasis and in vitro lactobacilli strains were confirmed to inhibit growth and some virulence traits of Candida.

Nonetheless, the mechanisms by which this interference occurs are not known. This PhD program aims to explore this

gap in knowledge to open the door to new intervention therapies aiming to tip the balance in favour of the commensal

lactobacilli by targeting Ca and Cg genes essential for competitiveness and survival in the presence of those bacteria.

In a time of awareness due to the constant emergence of Candida strains resistant to currently used antifungals, the

development of therapeutic approaches based on alternative targets is essential.
