Defense priming effect of endophytic and associative bacteria on wheat plants

Throughout my work, I aim to investigate whether the pre-inoculation of associative and endophytic bacteria in roots of wheat plants can condition these plant for the super-induction of immune responses against bacterial pathogens, a process known as “defense priming”. It is known that prior to symbiosis, bacteria establish a molecular crosstalk with the plant, interfering with plant gene expression, upregulating transport-, metabolism- and defense-related genes. However, little is known about how these organisms interfere with the plant defense responses in order to promote the plant microbiota assemblage. Throughout the next four years, I plan to study the metabolic pathways affected in both symbionts and the chemical components involved in this crosstalk through the combination of transcriptome and physiological analysis.
