Bacteriophage and Dual-Species Biofilm of Pseudomonas aerginosa and Staphylococcus aureus Interactions

On the last decade, biofilm-related studies have been directed to assess the impact on various aspects of our lives. Bacterial biofilms show a high degree of tolerance/resistance to disinfection by chemicals, human immune system and especially antibiotics. There is an increased concern about the efficacy of antibiotics, due to the widespread antibiotic resistance. This evidence has triggered searching alternative/supplementary therapeutic methods and strategies to combat biofilm-associated infections. Currently, bacteriophages (phages) are becoming a potential solution for the treatment of infections, namely the one caused by bacterial biofilms. Furthermore, it has been shown a synergistic effect of phages combined with certain antibiotics. The purpose of this work is to characterize the interaction of phage, antibiotic and phage-derived enzymes (endolysins) with biofilms, aiming at developing new strategies to control multi-species biofilm-related infections. This study will be focused on the opportunistic pathogens Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, which are two of the most frequent causes of biofilm-associated infections.
