Syngas fermentation using pressurized systems

A main focus of current environmental research is the study and development of new technologies to produce renewable bio-based fuels and chemicals. In what concerns the biological processes, the fermentation of lignocellulosic materials has received a great deal of attention, but limitations on the hydrolysis and low biodegradability of lignin are still hampering the implementation of this process. Gasification of biomass and further bioconversion of the synthesis gas (syngas) appears to be a promising alternative to the traditional fermentation process. Gasification allows almost complete conversion of carbonaceous materials to a syngas mixture, containing mainly CO, CO2 and H2. Additionally, the biocatalysts (microorganisms) used for syngas conversion are more resistant to impurities present in bio-syngas than the traditional metal catalysts. However, the biggest challenge in syngas bioconversion is to overcome the gas-liquid mass transfer limitations. Those limitations are related to the struggle to transfer the low-solubility gas components to the aqueous phase (where the biological reactions take place). Thus, the development of systems that promote the enhancement of mass transfer coefficient will increase productivity rates. Besides, a deeper study of the biocatalysts involved in syngas bioconversion and the respective pathways, will also contribute to boost the application of this technology.

In this project, it is proposed to improve syngas bioconversion by increasing gas-liquid mass transfer and consequently product yields, and directing the process to produce compounds with high economical and industrial value.

The project foresees the use of different pressurized bio-reactors designs (gas-lift bioreactor and axial agitation bioreactor), with syngas pressures up to 20 bar, with the goal to reduce gas-liquid mass transfer limitations by increasing syngas components solubility.
